Biography

Alexander Kornoukhov was born in 1947 in the family of artists.

Antonina Fedorovna his mother worked with V. A. Favorsky and P. D. Korin. In 1965 Alexander finished Architectural Art School where S. L. Ter-Gregoryan was his teacher.

He then entered Moscow Polygraphic Institute together with A. D. Goncharov and P. G. Zakharov. After graduation from the Institute he worked in the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

His first exhibition was held in 1976 in the Exhibition hall on Remizov Street 10 where oil paintings were exhibited. In 1977 Kornoukhov became member of the Art Union in the section of monumental painting because as a student he worked in the stained-glass window technique, mosaic and mural techniques (hydroelectric power station in Belovo, culture centre in Krasnoyarsk region, ATZ in Togliatti). Alexander´s first work in the Monumental Decorative Art Plant were eight mosaics for Culture Centre in Reutovo on the topic still life landscape with elements of antiquity. Alexander Kornoukhov received the Art fund prize for the Best work of the year for these mosaics. His further works were done together with L. Kurilo. In 1980 Alexander Kornoukhov created the architectural mosaic of natural stone in the clay stratum of adobe wall of the Administrative building of NPO Vega, Moscow.

He continued the historical (sometimes archaic) theme in the mosaic (total area 130 sq. m.) of the winter garden of the CHPZ plant in Cheboksary. Alexander Kornoukhov received the KHF Diploma for this mosaic. In the meantime Kornoukhov and Kurilo worked on architecture in Dubna, Centre of Space Communications, station 2, the body of which allowed to interpret the architecture as free sculpture of glass, steel, devices (radars) and architectural volume in the natural landscape. The Health Centre in Vladimir-30 (sculptural composition of glass and concrete) and German Centre in Karaganda can be interpreted partially in the same way. In 1985 as a dedication to 50th Anniversary of Moscow Regional Union of Artists Alexander Kornoukhov created a composition of separate mosaics to be interpreted not as easel paintings but as testimonies of fragments of invisible architecture. Alexander Kornoukhov treated natural stone in the project for Italian international mosaicist competition in 1982 and in 1986 created the mosaic stele for Ravenna park according to the project.

In 1989 the artist used mosaic in the church art and created tympanum for the Tbilisi Cathedral. This artistic trend was further expressed in works in the Moscow Metrophanes Voronezhsky Church, the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Tushino, the Church of the Holy Sign in Krasnogorsk. In 1994 the artist received the Degree of Laureate of the State Prize in 1994 for the mosaic (1200 sq. m.) in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Tushino. Thanks to such experience of creating church art he could create several mosaics in the Vatican Papal palace, particularly in the Raphael loggia, in Redemptoris Mater Chapel dedicated to 2000 Anniversary. The artist strived to unite the mosaic experience of the Eastern and Roman art in the architecture of the late Renaissance (1580). The architecture of the Roman Sant Ugo church made of monolithic concrete had a different character, the mosaic artist made new technological developments allowing to combine the foundation of monolithic concrete with soft traditional ground.

Alexander Kornoukhov has been member of the Artistic Council of the Monumental Decorative Art Plant since 1978 and member of the monumental section bureau of Moscow regional union of artists since 1984. Alexander went on business trips and attended conferences in other cities, wrote articles, carried out experiments and arranged creative conferences in art centres.
