Biography

Nall was born Fred Nall Hollis on April 21, 1948, in Troy, Alabama. He received a BA degree in Art, with minors in Psychology and Political Science from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa and spent four years studying at the Ecole Nationale Superiore de Beaux Arts in Paris, France. He had Salvador Dali as a mentor in 1972, 73, and 74. Nall has an international reputation working in many mediums:

Mosaics – Monumental “Sunrise & Sunset Pensee” for the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Sculpture – Violata Pax project in Assisi & Pietrasanta, Italy; Menton, France; Monaco Cathedral, Monaco; Mobile, Alabama. Monumental “Peace Frame” for the Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi, now in Monaco and the Pisa Airport, and permanently installed in Pietrasanta, Italy; “Violata Pax Colombe” Sculpture in Miami Dade College and in the permanent collection of Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Line engravings – Nall has produced over 150 copper plate etchings from 1971 to 1990 which are in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Museum of Pau, France; Birmingham, Montgomery, & Huntsville Museums of Art, and a complete collection of all of Nall´s line engravings in the Nice Museum of Fine Arts, Nice France and the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama. There are about 20 other museums containing Nalls works.

Mixed medium paintings – for 6 RSA Hotels in Alabama, and he realized the “Alabama Art” Project, with the book Alabama Art, now permanently housed in the Mobile Museum of Art.

Porcelain – 3 different dinnerware designs for Haviland and Parlon of Limoges,France. Coffee mugs and plates for the Puccini Foundation, realized by Tunisian Porcelain Co. Gift plates for the Monaco Lions Club, by the Monaco Porcelain Makers.

Nall is currently working on a new line of Limoges Dinnerware Porcelain of Alabama Camellias, produced by the Tunisian Porcelain Company, including six of Mobile´s Bellingrath Gardens Camellias. He has also started a new Book entitled The RSA Permanent Collection of Alabama Art, which includes more than 150 Alabama Artists.

Sets and costumes for “The Girl of the Golden West”, and “La Rondine” opera productions for the Festival Fondazione Pucciniano in Torre del Lago-Puccini, Italy.

Carpets – a new collection of carpet-tapestries were hand woven in silk and wool buy the finest artisan for Kamyar Moghadam in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Barbara Paci Galleria in Pietrasanta produced 3 carpets 4mx4m in wool.

International Art Fairs – FIAC, Paris, France; Miami Art Fair, Palm Beach Art Fair, Hamptons International Art Fair, NY.

Artist-in-residensy – University of Alabama 1999, Troy University where he was awarded an honorary doctorate (2001, 2002), Mimia Dade University in Miami, Florida (2007) – New World School of the Arts.

Nall lives and works in Fairhope, Alabama, USA, and has a studio at the N.A.L.L. Art Association in Vence, France which helps train and educate young Alabama artists, many who are recovering from alcohol, drugs and XXI century abuses.

Nall´s works have been acclaimed by CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Time Magazine, the Italian Republica, the French La Figaro, and The LA Times.
